General Description Of The Area

Niobrara Valley Electric's service area varies greatly as you pass through it. The southern border near Chambers, Nebraska displays the Nebraska Sand Hills. These grass covered sand dunes were formed millions of years ago. As you move northward, towards the town of O'Neill you enter a valley of lush grassland and meadows where flowing wells are a common site.

Moving north of U.S. Highway 20 that cuts through the center of our service area , you enter a flat land where a vast development of center pivot irrigation covers the land. Water is pumped from the Ogallala Aquifer which stretches from this area to central Texas. The great circles of the pivot systems are so striking from the air that commercial airline pilots often point them out to their passengers.

Further north of this farmland, the area changes to hard prairie grasslands that extend north to the scenic Niobrara River. Beyond the river extending to the South Dakota border, the soil changes to a heavy rich dryland farmland.
