Services Provided By Niobrara Valley

SECURITY LIGHTING PROGRAM
Our security light program allows for free installation of lights. The Cooperative will furnish 1 pole and 150' of wire for each light. The cost for an unmetered light per month is $6.46 for a 175 watt light and $12.36 for a 400 watt light. For lights that are metered a $1.71 monthly maintenance charge for a 175 watt light and $2.26 for a 400 watt light will apply. The Cooperative provides free repair for these rented lights.

DOUBLE THROW SWITCHES
A number of members have purchased standby generators in order to have electricity for use when severe weather conditions - such as ice storms, strong winds, and tornadoes - cause electric service interruption. Look here for tips on buying generators.

It is essential that in each service location (meter) with a standby generator, a double-throw switch be installed. This is a safety device for both the member and service personnel working on the line of the cooperative. This switch has a positive mechanism that permits the flow of electricity from only one source at a time. Without it, power from the generator could flow back into the line and cause a serious injury or death to a person working on the main line. Also, without this device, damage could occur to the member's equipment when the power from the main line is restored.

If you have a standby generator and do not have a double-throw switch permanently installed, please make arrangements to do so immediately. The Cooperative will furnish and install for it's members up to a 200 amp double throw switch for $20.00.

Safety for the members and the line personnel is important for everyone. Call 336-2803 for more information or e-mail us at niobraravalley@nvemc.org.

MEMBERS ON LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEMS
Today there are many instances where a home bound member, spouse, or child is being medically treated with an electric-powered life support system. In the event of a storm, accident, or planned outage, this could be a cause of considerable concern. It is a physical impossibility for Niobrara Valley Electric Membership Corporation to guarantee that the electricity will not go off at some time. Farm equipment and automobiles occasionally hit poles and tear the lines down, lightning strikes, and ice storms can also interrupt your power supply. Occasionally, our power supplier sustains damage to it's equipment, which stops the flow of power to N.V.E.M.C. To eliminate as many problems as possible, we suggest the member do some advanced planning that can help:

1. Call the Niobrara Valley Electric office and advise them of your situation. We may be able to offer some help.
2. Look into obtaining a personal emergency standby generator.
3. Consider installing a double-pole, double-throw switch so you could borrow a neighbor's emergency standby generator for a short time.
4. Remember, N.V.E.M.C. is concerned about your well being. If we can help, we will if given the opportunity. By working together now, we can reduce those problems you face when the lights do go out.

DIGGER'S HOTLINE
It is a law in Nebraska that everyone who excavates must first call the Digger's Hotline. You will need to call at least two but not more than ten business days before you plan to do the work. Anyone with underground facilities in the area of the excavation will clearly mark the location of this service.
